As your family grows and you accumulate more things, there may come a time when you need more living space. Enclosing a garage can be a great idea as it is already an extension of your home. As long as you know the right steps to take, you can easily add between 250 and 500 square feet of living space to your home.
Draw up a blueprint. Before you jump into your project, you want to think about every step in advance. This is important so that you don't waste valuable time and have to backtrack and do things over. You will also want to check with your local government for any building permits that you may need to obtain in order to legally enclose your garage.
Remove the garage door. You will need to remove the garage door and replace the open space with some kind of wall structure. If you have a concrete block home, you could just install concrete block in the entire open space. Another idea is to install French doors along with wood framing and vinyl siding. If you do not want door access in your new living space, you can always install a few windows along with a wood frame structure in the open space.
Set up any framework. Once your new room is completely sealed off from the outside, you can focus on any wood framework for building interior walls. The specific function you want your room to take will determine how many interior walls you will need to build. Building wood frames for interior walls requires several wood two-by-fours and plenty of nails to build your wood frame. Construct the wood frame on the floor and then raise it into place and then attach it to the ceiling and floor.
Finish the walls and ceiling. Your outside walls may have already been insulated and covered with drywall. If you have built interior walls, then you will need to put both insulation and drywall into place. The last step is to mud the walls so that after painting no marks or cracks from the seams will be visible. Some ceilings in the garage need will need little or no attention at all. The easiest option is to paint the existing ceiling.
