How to Build a Patio Cover. A patio cover can be a nice addition to your home and can be useful as a functional piece of furniture. It can also protect your house by not allowing the heat of the sun to beat into nearby windows and it can provide a solace of sorts where you can relax. The following steps will enable you to build such a sanctuary in your own backyard.
Establish the pitch of your roofline and the size of your patio cover.
Set the post base using the concrete anchors.
Put the 4-by-4 posts on the post base and then nail to the post base.
Create the support beam by setting the double 2-by-12 boards into the roofline.
Mark off your rafters at 2 feet on center.
Follow the design of the roof pitch and cut rafters and tails.
Cut your ridgeline and set rafters in place. This will take 2 people.
Place a block in between rafter tails. Every third rafter drill 3 1½-inch holes in the center.
Measure a piece of the metal screening and staple it to the inside of each block previously drilled with 1½-inch diameter holes.
Install 5/8-inch roof decking. This will take 2 people.
Fix and install flashing where the existing roofline and patio roofline intersect.
Take the tarp paper and install on roof. Leave a minimum of a 6-inch overlap. Start at the bottom and work your way up. Overlap 6 inches on both sides.
Put in drip edge and install shingles and start at the bottom of the roof.
Overlap shingles per manufactures instructions.
Install roof jack 2 feet on either side down from ridgeline.
Finish the underside of the roof by installing sheathing to it.
