How to Troubleshoot a Gravely Mower

Billy Kirk

Gravely makes a series of riding lawn mowers that prove essential for your lawn care when running properly. Unfortunately, a number of common mower problems can affect your Gravely mower and result in its failure to start and run properly.

The Gravely mower may need a spark plug replacement.

Fortunately, you can fix your Gravely mower and get it back to an operating condition even if you have no experience with lawn mower repair or general mechanical troubleshooting.

  1. Ensure there is fuel in your Gravely mower if it refuses to start. Refill the tank with gasoline as necessary.

  2. Install a new spark plug if the Gravely mower is cranking but will not start. Open the engine cover and locate the black plug wire that attaches into the spark plug. Disconnect the plug wire from the spark plug. Procure a new spark plug and attach the plug wire to it. Attempt to crank your Gravely mower.

  3. Adjust the air gap of your Gravely mower if it will crank but the engine still won't ignite. Open the engine cover again and follow the spark plug's black wire to the rear of the Gravely's engine assembly, where you will find the circular magnetic coil. Directly behind the coil is the flywheel. The gap between the two parts is the air gap. Measure it and ensure it is between 0.010 and 0.015 inch in width.

  4. Loosen the Gravely mower's magnetic coil with a wrench. Apply pressure to the coil to incrementally close or expand the air gap between the coil and flywheel in order to make it fall between the 0.010- and 0.015-inch measurement requirement.

  5. Replace the engine cover and start the Gravely mower's engine. It should crank and ignite.
