Queen mattresses sit between full and king on the mattress size chart. Manufacturers and vendors use a set of standard measurements to give the dimensions, and thereby size, of a queen mattress. Thickness is not one of these measurements, meaning that no standard queen mattress thickness exists. The thickness of a queen mattress, therefore, hinges on the manufacturer and the type. Some mattress manufacturers place so little emphasis on thickness as to not list it in product dimensions.
Standard Queen Dimensions
The standard dimensions of a queen mattress are 60 inches wide by 80 inches long. To compare this with other mattress dimensions, a standard full mattress measures approximately 53 inches by 75 inches, while the standard king-sized mattress measures 76 inches by 80 inches. These constitute approximate measurements, as each mattress manufacturer upholsters its mattresses differently, which leads to a discrepancy of a few inches.
Thickness measurements on mattresses vary wildly and often come under designations other than thickness, such as height. Some thicknesses of queen-sized mattresses commercially available in the Untied States as of 2011 are 6.75 inches, 8 inches (described by one mattress manufacturer as "traditional"), 10.75 inches, 11 inches, 12 inches, 13 inches, 13.5 inches and 15 inches. These measurements consider solely the mattress, not the box spring or other support upon which the mattress sits.
Various considerations affect the thickness of a mattress. Mattresses designed to conform to the body, such as memory foam mattresses, generally have larger thickness measurements than regular mattresses. Discount mattresses and others designed for easy portability are relatively thin. Other factors affecting thickness include quilting, layering, manufacturing method and quilting.
Mattress thickness relates to the brand and type of the mattress, but not necessarily to the size. Some memory foam mattresses, for instance, fall into types and each type has the same height across all sizes. Some companies allow consumers to customize mattresses by choosing accoutrements such as foam and quilting, which affect thickness by adding additional layers.
