Hogs, more commonly known as pigs, are large animals often roasted during the summertime for large gatherings and on special occasions. Although portable roasters can be used to roast other animals such as chickens, pigs are more commonly roasted due to their larger size. Although there are various types of roasters available commercially for a price, you can build your own hog roaster which can be more cost-effective. The portable hog roaster can be transported for usage virtually anywhere on the back of large truck or trailer.
Measure 1.5 inches from either end of the stainless steel rod and mark the spot with a marker.
Make a mark every 2 inches for half a foot starting from the first 1.5-inch mark.
Insert a drill bit into the drill and drill a hole at each of the marks. Make sure the holes are drilled through both sides of the steel rod. The holes will allow heat to dissipate through the spit and pig.
Drill 1.75-inch holes matching the diameter of the spit into the center of each end of the drum cylinder.
Saw the drum in half lengthwise to form the top and bottom half of the portable roaster.
Weld two heavy-duty brackets approximately 1/4 inches from each end of the bottom half of the drum cylinder.
Place the top half of the drum onto the bottom and measure the exact location of the brackets. Weld the other part of the two heavy-duty brackets into the top half of the drum.
Drill between 20 and 25 holes using a 1/2-inch drill bit into the floor of the bottom half of the drum. The holes will allow for ventilation.
Cut a grate 16 inches by 30 inches from the extruded metal sheet to fit into the bottom part of the drum. The grate will hold the charcoal.
Bend a small piece of scrap metal into a circular shape to form a handle. Weld the handle to the top half of the drum to use as a lid.
Place the roaster on a frame such as on the back of a trailer. Placing the roaster on the back of a trailer will allow for easy transportation.
Fill the bottom of the drum with 40 to 50 pounds of charcoal.
Clean the spit with a rag and soap. Insert the rod through the pig mouth and out its rear.
Open the roaster's lid and place the rod in the notches created. Close the lid before beginning to roast.
