How to Clean Carpet With Essential Oils to Remove Urine Smells

Chris Simon

Pet lovers sometimes allow animals to have the run of the house, but pets may have accidents or decide to mark their territory on the carpets. Urine smells will increase over time if not tackled immediately and may cause damage to the carpet pile and padding.

Use essential oils when deodorizing a carpet.

Air fresheners will only mask the urine smell for a short period of time and are not a permanent solution to the problem. A cleaning solution and deodorizer using household items and essential oils can be produced, which is inexpensive and will permanently eradicate the urine odor.

  1. Blot up the excess urine with newspaper. Soak up as much as possible using a blotting motion. Do not rub the stain as it may spread.

  2. Mix 3 tsp. distilled white vinegar and warm water in a clean, empty spray bottle. Vinegar is a natural cleaner and deodorizer that will neutralize the urine smell.

  3. Spray the vinegar solution on the stain and leave to soak for five minutes. Do not over soak the stain, but ensure the vinegar solution totally covers the stain.

  4. Blot the stain with an absorbent cloth or towel. Soak as much moisture as possible with a blotting motion. Again, do not use a rubbing motion.

  5. Mix 2 cups of baking soda and about 10 drops of essential oil in a suitable size mixing jug. The baking soda is a natural cleaner and deodorizer that will soak up urine. The essential oil will add a pleasant odor.

  6. Allow the baking soda and essential oils to sit on the urine stain until dry. You may allow the compound to sit in the carpet overnight.

  7. Vacuum thoroughly over the cleaned area once the baking soda and essential oils compound is dry.

  8. Tip

Baking soda and essential oils may be used as a general carpet deodorizer. Small amounts left in the carpet pile will act as an odor absorbent.

    Warning

Do not rub the urine stain as this may damage the carpet pile and padding.

Treat the stain as soon as you notice it. Urine will soak into the carpet padding if left untreated and the odor will not be easily removed.
