How to Change a Stainless Steel Sink Color

If you have an old stainless steel sink and want to soften up the look of the harsh, cold metal, you can paint it. Typically, paint does not adhere well to metal surfaces, but it is possible. There are a few tips you should know before you begin this project to help you paint the sink. It will take a few basic materials to complete this task.

Stainless Steel Sink

Step 1

Clean the sink with warm soapy water and use a coarse brush to eliminate any debris. Rinse the sink and thoroughly dry with a cloth.

Step 2

Wipe the sink down with a soft cloth dampened with mineral spirits. This will remove any soap residue that could prevent the paint from adhering. Wait for the sink to dry.

Step 3

Lay blue painter's tape over the areas you do not want painted such as the edges of the countertop surrounding the sink or the faucet.

Step 4

Scrub the sink with a wire brush to scuff the sink surface, which will help the paint adhere.

Step 5

Evenly apply paint primer to the sink's surface. Smooth out any dripping paint with a brush. Wait for the paint to set for 24 hours before applying the top coat.

Step 6

Brush on an even coat of latex paint on top of the layer of primer. Wait for the paint to dry for 2 hours. Apply another coat if necessary.
