York manufactures a full line of quality HVAC (Heating Ventilation Air Condition) systems for both residential and commercial installations. But no matter the quality of the system, there is always the possibility that something will go wrong. Troubleshooting (finding the source of the problem) York HVAC systems usually means checking the heating unit, the air conditioner, the vents and duct work and the inside thermostat. Any of these four components can lead to less than satisfactory climate control.

Filter

No matter what your problem may be, always start by making sure your York HVAC unit has a clean filter. Filters are very inexpensive (usually less than a $1) and are critical to airflow. Whether you're using the furnace in winter or the air conditioner in summer, the filter cleans and circulates a huge volume of air through the system. Some units place the filter near the air intake, while others may be located away from the main machinery. Check the filter at least once a month. If you live in very dry, dusty climates (such as a desert or open plains, for example), you may need to check the filter more often.

Heating Unit

If the air coming from your York gas furnace is not warm, check to make sure the burners are ignited. Igniters are small sparking devices used to light off the gas and are controlled by the thermostat. Make sure the burners are fully functional, with adequate flame heating the heat exchanger (a large, open-area box that warms the air.) Also, check to make sure all the fans are functioning normally to pull in cold air and blow out warm (or hot) air. If any of these components are malfunctioning, it can reduce or stop any warm air circulation.

Air Conditioner

Air conditioners use many of the same type of parts as the furnace (fans and air exchangers), but instead of burners, the air conditioner uses a compressor and coils to reduce the temperature of a coolant such as Freon. If your unit is not circulating cool air, check the coolant level to make sure the air conditioner has the specified amount (or "charge.") Then ensure the coils are free of any dirt or other material. This can reduce the unit's ability to lower the air temperature. Finally, make sure all the fans are operating properly to move the cool air away from the unit.

Thermostat

If both the heating and cooling units are not functioning properly, chances are the thermostat is not working correctly. If you have a digital thermostat, it may need batteries to operate. If there are no batteries, the simplest way to troubleshoot thermostat problems is by replacing the unit. A new thermostat can cost less than $20.00, even though it may not have all the features of more expensive units.

Switching out the thermostat requires removing its two mounting screws and then disconnecting the wires in the back. Install the new thermostat with the wires in the identical locations on the new unit.
