Apples come in many varieties, but no matter what type you buy, you need to know how to store them correctly. If you store apples wrong, they only end up going bad far quicker than you want them to. What's more, if you store your apples incorrectly, they actually speed up the rate at which other food you have goes bad.
Where to Store Apples
Apples should definitely be stored in the fridge. Some people don't like to keep apples in the fridge because they like the flavor of a room temperature apple fresh off the counter. This is fine if you only plan to keep your apples for a few days before you eat them. To store them longer, keep them as close to 32 degrees F as possible. An apple in the fridge lasts as much as 10 times longer than one on the counter.
When you put apples in the fridge, make sure they are stored in a plastic bag with holes punched in it. Some apples come in a solid plastic bag. Before you put them in the fridge, take a knife or a pair of scissors and make sure the bag has ventilation before you shut them up in the refrigerator.
Inspect your apples before you put them in the fridge. If there are any that have significant bruising or are starting to spoil, pull those imperfect apples out of the bag before you put the rest in the fridge. If you don't remove apples that are spoiling, they speed the spoilage process in the remaining good ones.
When you store apples in the fridge, store them away from other fruits and vegetables. A crisper drawer is a good place to put your apples. This is because they release a gas called ethylene. This gas causes other fruits to ripen quickly and spoil. This is especially true of green vegetables such as broccoli or salad greens, which are very susceptible to ethylene-induced spoilage.
