Step 1

Open your storage unit using your assigned key. Some public storage units also require a key card or a passcode to open. If you have difficulty opening your storage unit, speak to the attendant on duty for assistance.

Step 2

Wear your protective eye glasses and gloves in preparation for cleaning out the storage unit. Most public storage companies offer plenty of room to allow you to remove your items from the unit temporarily as you clean out the unit. If your storage unit is particularly full, remove a few items at a time as a means to clean your storage unit in sections.

Determine what items you would like to keep and what you can do without. Throw away these unwanted items in your garbage cans or carry them a dumpster outside the unit. Most public storage companies offer dumpsters or some type of garbage service on-site, including areas for trash that can be recycled.

Clean out your storage unit floors, walls and ceiling using your broom and mop at your leisure. Many public storage companies place guidelines as to what type of cleaning supplies you can use during this process; however, soap and water tend to be the most widely accepted chemicals. After you have finished cleaning the surface of your storage unit, replace your items so all possessions fit securely into the unit.
