How to Get Gentian Violet Out of Carpet

Shara JJ Cooper

Gentian violet is an antifungal medicine used to treat fungal infections like yeast on breastfeeding babies. Because it is bright purple, gentian violet quickly dyes porous materials like carpet. Several products are designed to help remove the stain. Try them in order.

Use laundry soap to remove gentian violet.

You may need to use them all to completely remove the stain.

  1. Pour dry-cleaning fluid onto the stain and let it sit for at least five minutes. Flush with plain water and soak up the moisture with an absorbent towel.

  2. Dab the stain with nail polish remover on a clean rag. Continue dabbing until no more stain comes off.

  3. Mix 1 tsp. of laundry detergent with 1 cup of water and wash the stain with the solution. Use a scrub brush to rub it into the carpet, flush it with plain water and dry it with a towel.
