Adjusting a Humidistat

A humidistat will either have a dial -- with numbers such as 1 through 10 or percentages listed -- or a digital display with buttons or a touchscreen. A homeowner can set and adjust the desired humidity level with this interface. Most manufacturers recommended a setting between 35 percent and 45 percent humidity. Humidistats with a 1-to-10 dial use an outdoor thermometer that adjusts to keep humidity around 35 percent; You'll adjust the dial above 5 if your home's well sealed and well insulated, and you'll adjust the dial below 5 if your home's less well sealed and insulated.

Reasons Why Adjusting a Humidistat Is Necessary

The humidity level in a house depends largely on the outdoor temperature and how well the house is insulated. When humidity levels indoors are too high, condensation may appear on windows, and the chance of wood rot, mold or mildew increases. When humidity levels are too low, individuals may notice dry throats and static electricity. Adjust the humidistat setting as necessary throughout the year as the outdoor temperature changes. When the outdoor temperature is colder and the air is more dry, raise the humidity in the home; when the outdoor temperature is warmer and the air is naturally more moist, lower the humidity level in the home.
